Our History
Origins of the Internet Academy
The Evergreen Internet Academy began in the Spring of 1999 as an alternative education opportunity in the Evergreen School District. Working from the examples of other online schools in Washington, Oregon, and Florida, a few pioneering individuals made this vision become reality. We have matured a great deal from those early days, but our focus has always remained the same: How can our program best meet the needs of our students?
Staff
EIA is successful because our entire staff is dedicated to helping students succeed. We could not be the strong school we are today without our shared focus on student success. Until 2001, our teachers shared time between online instruction and traditional classroom instruction. During this time, our courses were created and EIA established its foundation. In 2001, EIA hired its first full-time teachers. This small staff of three teachers diligently continued the development of EIA's courses, while the entire staff joined together to support the program. In 2002, we hired our fourth and fifth teachers, and hope to continue growing each year!
Students
The Evergreen Internet Academy serves students grades 7 through 12. When EIA opened its virtual doors, we shared students between Evergreen School District schools. Over time, word of our program spread, and students began attending EIA from many different backgrounds and locations. Our student body now includes Evergreen School District students, students in other Washington State public schools, students in other states and countries, privately schooled students, home schooled students, students who desire a non-traditional setting, and many others. We take great pride in the diversity of our students!
Courses
Teachers at the Evergreen Internet Academy do not just administer courses. They continually review, revise, and develop curriculum. The foundation of our curriculum was developed by the first teachers at EIA. Since then, the teachers have been continually improving the courses to better meet the needs of our students, based upon current research into online education and our students' feedback.
Identity
Part of our growth as a school has been developing our own identity. In 2001, we chose school colors (crimson and forest green) and a mascot (the phoenix). Who knows what's next? Virtual sports teams?
